He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And whereas he fears, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Noble and pious. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 Olives and dates, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
