The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
