Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
