A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
