a large throng from the ancients, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
