The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
