He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and in awe of God 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 (It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). 13 Exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
