Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
