The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
