Then seized We Pharaoh's people with years of dearth, and scarcity of fruits, that haply they might remember. 130 Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand. 131 They said: "Whatsoever the sign you have brought to deceive us, we shall not believe in you." 132 We therefore sent against them the flood and the locusts and the vermin (or insects) and the frogs and the blood – separate signs; in response they were proud and were a guilty people. 133 And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Moses, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you [can] remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel." 134 But when We did remove from them the terror for a term which they must reach, behold! they broke their covenant. 135 So We exacted retribution from them and drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our signs and paid no heed to them; 136 We made the people who were considered weak inheritors of the eastern parts and western parts of the land which We had blessed. Thus your Lord's good promise to the Children of Israel was fulfilled, because of their patience, and We destroyed all that Pharaoh and his people had built and all that they had raised high. 137 AND WE BROUGHT the children of Israel across the sea; and thereupon they came upon people who were devoted to the worship of some idols of theirs. Said [the children of Israel]: "O Moses, set up for us a god even as they have gods!" He replied: "Verily, you are people without any awareness [of right and wrong]! 138 Surely this they are engaged upon shall be shattered, and void is what they have been doing.' 139 He said, "Is it other than Allah I should desire for you as a god while He has preferred you over the worlds?" 140 And remember We rescued you from Pharaoh's people, who afflicted you with the worst of penalties, who slew your male children and saved alive your females: in that was a momentous trial from your Lord. 141
