(Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician, 34 Who wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery. Now what do you advise?" 35 They said: "Put him and his brother off awhile, and send summoners to the cities to gather 36 to mobilise all skilled magicians." 37 And so the sorcerers were assembled at a set time on a certain day, 38 And the people were also asked to assemble. 39 so that we may follow the magicians, if they be the winners." 40 So when the magicians came, they said to Firaun, “Will we get some reward if we are victorious?” 41 "Yes," he replied. "You 'will be among the honoured." 42 Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw." 43 So they cast their ropes and staffs, saying: 'By Pharaoh's might, we shall be the victors' 44 Then Moses cast down his staff and it swallowed up their lying invention, 45 so the sorcerers were cast down, prostrating themselves, 46 saying, "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 47 The Lord of Musa and Haroun. 48 Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!" 49 They said: no harm! verily unto our Lord we are to return. 50 Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers." 51
