Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
