The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
