A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
