The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
