The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the sun and his morning brightness 1 And the moon as she follows in his wake, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 And a soul and Him Who perfected it 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil). 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
