O Children of Israel! Just recall to mind My favour that bestowed upon you, and remember that I exalted you above all the peoples of the world. 47 Take heed of the day when no man will be useful to man in the least, when no intercession matter nor ransom avail, nor help reach them. 48 And when We delivered you from the folk of Pharaoh who were visiting you with evil chastisement, slaughtering your sons, and sparing your women; and in that was a grievous trial from your Lord. 49 and when We cleft the sea before you, and thus saved you and caused Pharaoh's people to drown before your very eyes; 50 And (remember) when We appointed for Musa (Moses) forty nights, and (in his absence) you took the calf (for worship), and you were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). 51 Then, even after that, We pardoned you in order that ye might give thanks. 52 We gave Moses the Book and the criteria (of discerning right from wrong) so that perhaps you would be rightly guided. 53 and when Moses said unto his people: "O my people! Verily, you have sinned against yourselves by worshipping the calf; turn then, in repentance to your Maker and mortify yourselves; this will be the best for you in your Maker's sight". And thereupon He accepted your repentance: for, behold, He alone is the Acceptor of Repentance, the Dispenser of Grace. 54 And when you said “O Moosa! We will not believe you till we clearly see Allah”; so the thunder seized you while you were watching. 55 But We raised you again after you had been as dead, so that you might have cause to be grateful. 56 And We made the clouds to give shade over you and We sent to you manna and quails: Eat of the good things that We have given you; and they did not do Us any harm, but they made their own souls suffer the loss. 57 And (remember) when We said: "Enter this town (Jerusalem) and eat bountifully therein with pleasure and delight wherever you wish, and enter the gate in prostration (or bowing with humility) and say: 'Forgive us,' and We shall forgive you your sins and shall increase (reward) for the good-doers." 58 But the transgressors perverted the words said to them entirely into a different thing. So We sent down upon the transgressors a severe torment from the sky: that was the punishment for the disobedience they were showing. 59
