The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 And [by] the night when it covers it 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He does not fear the result (of their destruction). 15
