The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
