The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
