a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
