A company of the former peoples 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
