The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
