You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 or a little more; and with recitation, recite the Koran. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And a food that chokes, and a painful torment. 13 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God's promise shall be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
