Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
