The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and the day in splendour 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 We shall facilitate the path to bliss 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
