[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 I am for you an honest Messenger. 125 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 126 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 And you make strong fortresses that perhaps you may 129 When you lay hands upon anyone, you do so as tyrants. 130 "Now fear Allah, and obey me. 131 and fear Him who has succoured you with what you know, 132 Provided you with grazing livestock and children 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 They replied: "It is all the same for us whether you admonish us or not. 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 “And we will not be punished.” 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
