The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
