Nay! By the moon 32 Consider the night when it departs, 33 And by oath of the morning, when it spreads light. 34 This is but one of the mighty (portents), 35 a warning to humankind, 36 Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. 37 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, 38 except those of the right hand 39 In Gardens they will question 40 about the guilty ones: 41 “What took you into the hell?” 42 They will say: we have not been of those who prayed. 43 nor did we feed the destitute. 44 We plunged in with the plungers 45 And we have been belying the Day of Requital. 46 until the Inevitable End [death] overtook us." 47 So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them. 48 So what is the matter with them that they turn away from the advice? 49 As though they were frightened asses 50 fleeing from a lion? 51 Aye! every one of them desireth that: he should be vouchsafed scrolls expanded. 52 No, indeed they have no fear of the Everlasting Life. 53 No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder. 54 So, whoever wills, will remember it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
