The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
