He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 So you are after him! 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 you ignore him. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 olives, dates, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
