Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
