a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
