The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
