The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
