Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
