The Human (Al-Insan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HAS THERE [not] been an endless span of time before man [appeared - a time] when he was not yet a thing to be thought of? 1 Surely We have created man from a small life-germ uniting (itself): We mean to try him, so We have made him hearing, seeing. 2 We have indeed shown him the way – whether he is grateful or ingrate. 3 We have prepared for unbelievers chains and collars and a blazing fire. 4 Surely the pious shall drink of a cup whose mixture is camphor, 5 a fountain whereat drink the servants of God, making it to gush forth plenteously. 6 They perform (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil flies far and wide. 7 and who give food - however great be their own want of it - unto the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, 8 (Saying): "We feed you seeking Allah's Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you. 9 for we fear from our Lord a stern, frownful Day' 10 So Allah saved them from the evil of that day, and gave them freshness and joy. 11 And hath awarded them for all that they endured, a Garden and silk attire; 12 Reclining there upon couches, they shall see neither the sun nor the moon. 13 And close upon them will be the shades thereof, and low will hang the clusters thereof greatly. 14 And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and goblets of crystal,- 15 crystal-like, [but] of silver - the measure whereof they alone will determine. 16 And they will be given to drink there a cup (of wine) mixed with Zanjabil (ginger, etc.), 17 Which is a spring in Paradise called Salsabeel. 18 ۞ And boys of everlasting youth will go about attending them. Looking at them you would think that they were pearls dispersed. 19 When thou seest, thou wilt see there bliss and high estate. 20 they will wear green garments of fine silk and rich brocade. They will be adorned with silver bracelets. And their Lord will give them a pure drink. 21 Behold, this is a recompense for you, and your striving is thanked.' 22
