A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
