A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin of disbelief. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefore proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
