The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
