Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 "You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
