He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 So you are after him! 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and fearfully, 9 You neglect. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 and covered by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
