Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
