The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
