No blame is on you if ye divorce women while yet ye have not touched them nor settled unto them a settlement. Benefit them; on the affluent is due according to his means and on the straitened is due according to his means, a reputable present and duty on the well-doers. 236 If ye divorce them before ye have touched them and ye have appointed unto them a portion, then (pay the) half of that which ye appointed, unless they (the women) agree to forgo it, or he agreeth to forgo it in whose hand is the marriage tie. To forgo is nearer to piety. And forget not kindness among yourselves. Allah is Seer of what ye do. 237 Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand up to Allah truly devout. 238 And if ye go in fear, then (pray) standing or on horseback. And when ye are again in safety, remember Allah, as He hath taught you that which (heretofore) ye knew not. 239 And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they shall make a bequest unto their wives a year's maintenance without their having to go out, then if they go out, then no blame is on you for that which they do with themselves reputably, and Allah is Mighty, Wise. 240 And for divorced women is a provision according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous. 241 In this way God makes clear unto you His messages, so that you might [learn to] use your reason. 242
