The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 and your third idol al-Manat (whom you considered as God's daughters)? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
