The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 They do not expect any reward 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
