He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he feareth 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 lofty and pure, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
