We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them. 47 Of all the miracles which We showed to them the latter ones were greater than the former. We struck them with torment so that perhaps they would return to Us. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
