The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
