The people of 'Ad accused the messengers of lies. 123 When their fellowman Hud said to them, “Do you not fear?” 124 I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 126 I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 127 You construct monuments on every hill in vain, 128 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever. 129 And if ye seize by force, seize ye as tyrants? 130 Have fear of God and obey me. 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 And gardens and springs. 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 "This is no other than a customary device of the ancients, 137 And we are not going to be tormented. 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 140
